Dongguan Riverside: A Green Oasis in the Heart of the City

Designed by Peng Xiaohua, the Dongguan Riverside project is a remarkable sports center that seamlessly integrates residents' cultural activities, healthy sports, and livable waterfront life. This innovative design is a response to the need for urban spaces that promote health, culture, and leisure, while also enhancing the city's aesthetic appeal. The project is located in a new urban area of Dongguan City, Guangdong Province, China.

The inspiration behind the design is to create an urban highlight that echoes the characteristic cultural riverside shoreline and green cultural and leisure corridors. The building is cleverly hidden under the greenery, resembling a green hill, while the air link of the project base is agile and elegant like a ribbon dancing in the wind. The facade of the building is twisted and stretched with horizontal lines, creating a sense of flow and movement.

What sets this design apart is its focus on activating the vitality of the city and reshaping the spirit of the site. The facade design adopts an international modern style, using the aesthetic sense of architectural lines to reflect a sense of future, flow, and technology. The project covers an area of about 17,520 square meters, with a project scale of 19,510 square meters.

The sports center is designed to function as a natural oxygen bar on the corner of the city, integrating fitness, sports, parking, and transportation hubs into one. The building volume is reduced, the landscape is integrated into life, and the design is deeply rooted in the hearts of the people. The project started in 2021 and is currently in the conceptual stage.

One of the main challenges faced in the design process was ensuring the compatibility between the buildings and greening. Given the project's location on the bank of the river, the waterproof and moisture-proof performance of the building during construction was a major difficulty. Despite these challenges, Peng Xiaohua's design has been recognized with a Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2023, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.
